Daughter is Brandy’s Best Friend

Songstress Brandy says her relationship with six-year-old Sy’rai Iman Smith is more than mother and daughter; in a new interview with Vibe magazine she says they’re “like best friends.”
“I like her as a person. She makes me laugh. So much insight comes from her. She’s six going on 18. We sing together. We crack jokes … I’m just so glad that she’s mine.”
While her relationship with Sy’rai’s dad Robert Smith didn’t work out, neither one is bitter.
“You can’t be so mad at somebody who gave you that kind of a gift,” Robert explained. “At the end of the day, we have a beautiful child, and I’m the happiest man on Earth. That’s really the logistics of it. No drama.”
Robert has since remarried and become the father of three more daughters, while Brandy remains single. She admits she sometimes wonders “What’s going on?” but adds that for now she’s happy to focus on her little girl. Although that attention isn’t always welcome!
“I think that’s why I’m so close to my daughter - because I don’t have a relationship to balance it out,” she explained. “I’m so clingy with her, she’s like, ‘Mom, let me breathe.’”
